United Nations Ends Penalties on President of Syria Prior to White House Visit

The UN Security Council voted in favour to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting the coming week.

He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that removed the previous leader in the final month of 2024, ending thirteen long years of domestic strife.

The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" after Assad's removal.

He had been subject to global penalties in his role as head of the religious organization HTS, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. The US removed the group from its registry of global extremist entities this past July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and to friendly nations for backing of Syria and its people."

Imminent Washington Talks

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.

Following their discussion, the US president stated Sharaa had "a legitimate chance at pulling it together".

Both presidents held discussions initially in May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country prior to breaking relations back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the United States this year. During September, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the global assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
