Miami recorded eighty-six opening half scores against the Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a crushing 146-114 victory over the Grizzlies in their first NBA game since player Terry Rozier was detained for suspected unlawful sports betting.
Trail Blazers head coach Billups was additionally detained as part of a broad federal probe into sports betting. The two individuals contest the allegations.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six opening half scores to lead the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later said Rozier had the support of the team.
"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces this."
Portland also won their first game since the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
The commissioner also mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were open about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.
"So, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"And 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
